In most Disney movies there is a villain, though often times he or she is misunderstood. Like in Beauty and the Beast, all Gaston wanted was to marry Belle. Or in the Little Mermaid, Ursula just wanted to rule for a little while. Cinderella's sisters just wanted to meet the prince and fall in love. And Snow White's step mother was just jealous of her beauty. Just like the other villains listed above, in the movie Tangled Mother Gothel wasn't wrong for what she did to Rapunzel while she was growing up.

The magic flower was hers from the beginning. The royal soldiers were wrong for taking something that was hers and destroying it without asking her. They probably could have come to a compromise and only take a petal or leaf but they didn't. They stole from her and she simply just wanted to get something back.

Mother Gothel tried to keep Rapunzel safe and seemed to care about her a lot. She raised her like her own daughter and treated her very well. For a 'villain' she was actually a very caring person. She didn't want to lose her new most precious thing in the world. She treated Rapunzel like she was her own flesh and blood and gave her anything she needed. She was a nice mother and a lot of kids would be lucky to have someone like her.

She did a pretty good job of raising Rapunzel. Throughout the movie we see how kind and caring Rapunzel is. Where could she have been taught those values? Mother Gothel taught her the difference between right and wrong. She even warned her about the dangers of the world outside their home, something other parents would rather avoid doing.

So as you see, Mother Gothel wasn't wrong for what she did to Rapunzel while she was growing up, especially when you take into account how caring and loving she grew up to be. Though some characters might come across as evil or villainess, deep down they're just poor people that are trying as best as they can to reach their goals. Sometimes they do things that come across as bad, but they didn't mean to do that. All they want is to accomplish their goals, is that too much to ask for?
For my writing class this week we had to write a good thesis paper with a nice argument. So for mine I did a topic I've been thinking about since I first saw the movie.

Was Mother Gothel wrong for what she did?

You can argue if you want, but I just wrote this because I was talking about it with my friend and I thought this would be a better subject than Twilight.

Have you really listened to that song Mother Knows Best? She insults Rapunzel almost constantly throughout it, a loving parent wouldn't do that, not with that tone of seriousness anyway. Her position only seems ambiguous when you keep your argument in their world and ignore the fact that this sort of thing happens in the real world. People kidnap other people's children or even their own and raise them for personal purposes. You know what we do with those people? Arrest them. Because they kidnapped and (often) brainwashed the children.
